Lanterman's Mill 2011 - Interior Equipment
Level 2: Timbers
Many of the original timbers have been replaced due to rot, but some remain-look for the axe marks from hand-hewing, and for up-and-down saw cuts (today's saws leave circular marks.) These large timbers are held together by mortise and tenon. A mortising drill made a hole which was squared up with and hand chisel. The tenon was inserted into the mortis , and a wooden peg called a trunnel was driven in to hold the joint together.

Virtually no nails are used in the mill's fram. Forged nails were used only in the flooring and siding, and they have square heads.

These are the wheels and belts that transfer the energy from the waterwheel.
The shaft (center of waterwheel ) transfers the power through gears up into the mill.
This level (the one with the front door) houses this equipment that allows the power to start the millstones to turn.
As the millstone cap moves its one ton stone on top of the bed stone, the grain is fed into the center of the stones through a hopper.

Upon closer inspection you can see the stones have a wooden case around each set of stones.
Also you can see the hopper that funnels the grain into the stones to begin grinding.

Via elevator shafts the ground grain is then lifted into these large bins and released into bags.
The ground grain is now ready to be sold at market.

Roller Mill.
When it functioned it had a belt around that wheel.
The movement of the belt and wheel made the rollers inside this piece of equipment crush the grain smooth into flour.

An elevator protrudes on the right and funnels the processed grain into a bag or bucket.

Grinding the Grain through the Millstones
The grain reaches the bottom stone where centrifugal force pushes it in an outward spiral between the stones, crushing the grain into meal., which is coarser than flour. As meal reaches the outside of the stone, a sweeper moves it to a chute leading to the elevator for sifting, or it may be bagged straight off the stones' side.
