The springs from Hamer Cave flow into the mill pond. The wooden flume takes the water from the mill pond and it carries it to the wooden water wheel about 1/4 mill from its origin.

Today the wooden flume has an iron pipe that takes the water from the mill pond inside the wooden flume.
First the water was being lost through the wooden flume.
Secondly, the wooden flume became deteriorated over many years.
The iron pipe preserves the wooden flume and protects excess water loss.

The hand-carved limestone piers support the elevated flume from the waters orgin in the mill pond.

Spring Mill - Hammer Cave Springs creates the mill pond at the dam.
There is a dam that collects the spring water from Hammer Cave. The water flows through the sluice gates and into the wooden flume. When there is excess water from the springs, it flows over the dam as evidenced here.

As the flume gets closer and closer to the wooden water wheel, the flume must continue to be elevated to hit the overshot waterwheel.
